Matadora
Matadora focuses on an issue that has affected black men and women for many years----- police brutality. In attempt to shine a light from a new angle, bullfighting is used as a metaphor for the senseless killings of black citizens. In bullfighting, the bull is provoked before the show and the matador is held up as a hero, though in the end he ultimately kills an innocent animal. The same is true for police brutality, black citizens are being profiled on a daily basis and many lose their lives due to stereotypes; but the biggest issue is that the killers aren’t being held accountable—they are the heroes.
This collection is the evolution of African Americans; from being the slain bull to being the matadors of oppression. This is expressed in a very subtle way, making the audience piece together the clues from the referential imagery within the collection. The imagery is shown hoods (hoodies), drop crotch tuxedo pants (sagging), black gowns with red lining (the redlining practice that started the problem), braided hair embellished onto the gowns, freedom quilt motifs, and the elaborate matador jacket in the end to signify that transformation.
